A building’s insulation properties are measured using R-values and U-values. R-values are used to measure a building or a building material’s thermal resistance. By using building materials with high R-values, it is possible to increase the resistance to heat-gain and heat-loss that accompanies changes in weather.

Where a building is constructed from building materials with a low R-value, such as bricks and mortar, thermal resistance can be increased through proper insulation  such as in the roof, or by cladding walls, using double glazing and reducing drafts through doors.
